With the end of the World War Ⅱ, the government of the late Qing Dynasty completely was under the bad consequences of the seclusion policy and obscurantism. The great gap between Chinese and Western was also exposed completely, especially in the field of science and technology. At that time, the Chinese government began to accept and learn the advanced knowledge of science and technology from the West. As the main force of transforming western learning, Western missionaries launched diversified spread campaigns in China, such as running newspaper, creating schools, translating western books, setting up hospitals and building publishing institutions, etc. Among these campaigns, sci-tech journal developed rapidly relying on its advantages, such as flexibility, large capacity and wide influence. And the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine, created by a British missionary, John Fryer, in Shanghai in 1876 was considered as the first comprehensive sci-tech periodical in China.Aimed to spread western learning, the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine published a great deal of modern natural science knowledge, and not only created the career of popularization of science in China, but also had important effects on other aspects in China. According to the contents of the journal, John Fryer introduced a lot of practical light industry technology in Western countries to China. But I had not found any systematic study on this aspect. So this paper would research about the light industry technology in the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine from the following three aspects:Firstly, on the basis of the existing studies, this article concluded the edition and publishing of the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine, including the social and historical conditions, the editorial staff, the general contents, publishing as well as management, at the same time putting my own viewpoint..Secondly, for the first time, this article systematically arranged and classified the total contexts related to the light industry technology, and focused on analyzing some of them, such as the textile-dye technology, the food-manufacturing technology, the printing and paper-making technology, the porcelain technology and glass-making technology. This paper mainly explores each technology’s promotion ways, materials, machine equipment and processes. At last, the article explored the influences or communication effect of the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine, including three aspects:one is to improve the public’s sci-tech cognitive level; the second is to promote the Westernization Movement; the third is to promote the development of the traditional light industry technology in China, and speed up our country’s industrialization process. In this paper, from researching comprehensively on the contents of the light industry technology in the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine, we could see that this relevant contents took a proportion in the total magazine contents, reflecting that John Fryer considerably put emphasis on the technical knowledge and the light industry technology had an important role in the periodical, which did have influenced many aspects in our country.
