In recent years, the Internet of Things has been growing significantly in China. The wireless sensor network, considered as the terminal of the Internet of Things, has developed rapidly as well. However, the energy problem is a barrier for the wireless sensor network. Thus, it is a hot topic to keep the network operating normally with the minimum energy consumption. One of the core technology, the Routing Protocol, should not only deal with the data transmission, but also take the energy consumption into consideration. This paper will analyze the features of existing routing protocols, and improve the protocols by developing the algorithm. The main tasks are:1. Introduction of the features and performance index of the wireless sensor network. Review of some typical routing protocols and key points of routing protocol design.2. Detailed analysis of the Optimal Cluster Number Algorithm and the Rotating Cluster Head Rotation Mechanism. Carrying out the study of their features and working principle.3. Improving the existing Ring Domain Uniformly Ring Algorithm by employing the uneven-distributed ring method. The general procedure can be described by:(1) For balancing the energy consumption between the inner and outer cluster head, calculate the ring spacing factor of the uneven-distributed ring;(2) Carry out a new cluster head election scheme which take the left energy, the node density and the node position into consideration;(3) Employ the Rotating Cluster Head Rotation Mechanism to balance the energy consumption of each area in the network. The results from Matlab have shown that the improved algorithm is effective and efficient to decrease the energy consumption in the network and extend the network’s lifetime.
