Light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor electronic component whichhas the capable of emitting light. It’s widely used in types of electronic equipment anddevices, and can be used as power indicator or micro light source. With the expasionof LED application field, the users have a higher demand for the quality of the LEDproducts, so the LED standard and detection technology attacked a worldwideattention. For the printed circuit board assembled LED (PCBA, Printed Circuit Board+Assembly), the LED on board need to be tested before the PCBA has beenassembled into the product, which is an important part of the PCBA function test.However, in the domestic such tests are usually carried out by the artificial. In themanual detection process there are the widespread detection leakages or errors, andthe needy halt in the detectiom process will reduce the detection efficiency. Therefore,the realization of automatic detecting LED on PCBA is a problem need to study andsolve, and it has the great practical value.In this paper, we introduced in detail the current situation of the development of theLED detection technology at home and abroad, compared the various kinds of LEDbrightness and color detection scheme base on artificial detection, spectral characteristicsdetection, luminous intensity detection and luminous flux detection respectively,analyzed the advantage and disadvantage of each detection scheme, and proposed anautomatic LED detection scheme base on TCS230chip. In this scheme, according to thedetection characteristics of the TCS230chip and RGB color recongnition principle wedesigned the LED detection system composed by the TCS230mainly that canautomatically detect and judge the LED brightness and color. We compared many testresults with the different hardware desighns, software desighns and detection conditionsunder the proposed scheme, track and solve the design flaws through a lot of detetiontests, and analyzed the main causes of detection errors.We validated the feasibility of the detection scheme “TCS230+fiber” by the10thousands PCBA detection reslut that the LED brightness frequency and the Huevalues can meet the design requirements which accords with the conventional manualinspection. A large number of laboratory detection data and the real productiondetection data show that the detection scheme is reliable and can improve theefficiency of detecting the LED on PCBA.
