With the development of radio frequency identification technology and the increasing of road traffic problems, RFID System on Roads is a recently developed framework that focuses on enhancing transportation safety. In RFID system on roads, a large scale of passive RFID tags with road related information are deployed on road surfaces or roadside units. A vehicle with an onboard RFID reader can acquire the road information (e.g. vehicle location, road direction and the speed limit) via reading from these RFID tags, so that to help the driver to acquire comprehensive lane level traffic information. Different from the traditional road information, real-time traffic information including more emergent information, such as traffic accidents, traffic control and temporary traffic inspection. This information not only tells the driver road congestion and its reason, but also helps the driver to independently judge the path planning. As a result, it is critical to update the tags with the emergent information in a timely manner in RFID system on roads. In this paper, we design an emergent information diffusion scheme that aims to quickly and accurately update the contents of the RFID tags. The main results of the work are presented as follows:(1) According to the requirement of real-time traffic system based on RFID, we analyze the characteristics of RFID working frequency, and select the suitable parameters for our system. Moreover, we study the tags memory layout based on the requirement of real-time traffic systems.(2) We analyze the existing problem in tags update, and give the detailed scheme design and algorithm description for three aspects (tag clustering, tag updating and vehicles information exchanging). In our design, we classify RFID tags into clusters. The emergent information and update status of these clustered tags can be read by passing by vehicles. These vehicles can exchange such information with each other via vehicle-to-vehicle communications. After synthesizing the received information, these vehicles can update the nearby tags and spread the information accordingly. Through this way of vehicles’collaboration, tags can rapidly update with emergent information, so as to ensure the real-time of traffic information.(3) The current mainstream network simulation tools do not support the simulation of microscopic traffic. So in order to make the vehicle movement more authentic in our simulation, we look in detail at vehicle communication and movement model, and use of OMNeT++to build the simulation platform of real-time traffic system.(4) The performance of real-time traffic information based on RFID system on roads is repeated verification and analyze by OMNeT++, which shows that the proposed scheme is effective. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to focus on the problem of updating RFID tags in RFID system on roads, and it will have certain references for further related research.
