With the rapid development of microelectronics technology, especially in 3G/4G period, the mobile phone, as the crucial wireless communication equipment, has developed quickly. Intelligent, ultrathin, broadband and multifunction have been essential measures of the mobile phone quality. As the result, miniaturization and broadband are developing direction of antenna for mobile phone. Nowadays, the common bands of mobile equipments including GSM900(890MHz-960MHz), GSM1800(1710MHz-1820MHz),DCS(1.71GHz-1.88GHz),WIFI(2.400GHz-2.484GHz),Bluetooth(2.400 GH z-2.500GHz) and WLAN(5.150GHz-5.250 GHz,5.725 GHz-5.825 GHz). What’s more, long term evolution(LTE) system will be used in the fourth wireless wide area network(WWAN) systems due to its significantly high data rate. So antennas for mobile phone are required to be more compact and have wider band.In this paper, the development history and current situation of mobile phone antenna are introduced firstly, and prediction of the future development of mobile phone antenna is given. Then introduced the basic principle of microstrip antenna, radiation parameter and testing tools. In the third chapter, the commonly-used mobile phone antenna and methods to realize miniaturization and multiband are illustrated by giving examples. Two novel antennas for mobile phone are researched in this paper. One is an IFA, which function is obtained by adding parasitic units and resonant cells in original IFA antennas. According to space folded method, the size of IFA antenna is reduced by more than 40% compared with antennas mentioned in reference papers. Another one is LTE antenna, which used buckling and coupling technology to achieve miniaturization and multiband. Moreover, the antenna is available to cover GSM and LTE bands.
