With the growing needs for security in the society nowadays, video surveillance system, as the most important part in security industry, plays a vital role in various areas, including public security, transport, electricity, finance, etc. In recent years, with the release and implementation of the networking regulations by Ministry of Public Security, the networking scale of video surveillance has been expanding, the quality of the video has been improved significantly, which leads to the tremendous increase in the system’s further needs for media data capacity in terms of data transmission and data storage. The traditional video surveillance system with single server cannot sufficiently serve the demands from current system development. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new video surveillance system with the media server cluster architecture, which adds significant assets to the service quality and system performance.With the pursuit of solving the bottleneck problem of server performance at the traditional video surveillance system, this thesis introduces the technique of server cluster, and re-designs the structure of video surveillance system, proposes a new video surveillance system with the media server cluster architecture. Focusing on two aspects, namely media delivery and media storage, this thesis proposes to design the cluster architecture of media delivery servers and media storage servers. With the collaborate work, it can balance the workload of the media delivery and media storage, which will not only effectively solve the bottleneck problem of servers performance, but also improve the overall availability, reliability and scalability. The key research and findings in this thesis are presented as the follows:1. In terms of the procedure of media delivery in video surveillance system, this thesis proposes a strategy which ensures a well-balanced sharing of workload among the server joints based on dynamic feedback and collaborations, which further enables the media delivery server to deliver the data in a cluster-architecture mode.2. In terms of the procedure of media storage in video surveillance system, this thesis suggests to apply HDFS as the file distribution system to build up the cluster architecture of media storage servers, which provides a solution to the issue of massive data storage.3. This thesis encloses a detailed analysis on the overall structure and module frameworks of video surveillance system, which illustrates the interaction process and functional interface of each module.4. This thesis provides the implementation of each module in the video surveillance system, and finally tests the system and analyses its performance.
