Ontology is born in the philosophy category, for describing the nature concept of things. Nowadays, Ontology has been an effect method of presenting and managing knowledge under distributed semantic environment in the field of information science. Research of creating, publishing, viewing, editing and storing one ontology has been more mature now. While with the increasing scale of knowledge, the domain has been more diverse and complex, it is necessary to construct large-scale ontology and ex-perts from different fields need collaborative editing. It is inconvenient to construct single ontology, for the global ontology construction will be difficult and information sources from different view could not be integrated well. Wi:h the increasing scale of ontology, the time of loading ontology is increasing and editorial staff could not focus on his expertise areas.To solve the above problems, this paper researches current methods of con-structing ontology under distributed environment and then proposes to construct large-scale ontology as distributed hierarchical ontology. Distributed hierarchical on-tology segment ontology storage in the physical layer and maintain ontology integrity in the logical layer. To establish such model, this paper classifies the ontology layer, first layer is root ontology, namely frame ontology, each leaf node corresponds to a physical ontology file which is segment as certain knowledge fields; second layer are domain ontologies under each knowledge domain, this layer is partition as conceptual layer and domain characteristic, and map to the leaf node in the first layer one-by-one. Editorial staff could utilize frame ontology to locate and access sub-areas ontology. Editorial staff only can access the ontology they have privilege and then edit and submit them. Administrator detects conflicts through ontology and operation records, after resolving the conflicts updates the new ontology to the basic library.Then this paper describes several concrete operations about distributed hierarchy ontology. Besides basic edit operation, this paper adds reference relations between ontologies and provides the mechanism of collaborating edit operation. For example, operations should satisfy certain constraints to complete.Next, to solve the problem of detecting and resolving conflicts in the committed operation set and to maintain the consistence of ontology, this paper proposes the cor-responding algorithm to evolve ontology in the corresponding stage.Finally, to demonstrate the feasibility and validity, this paper simulates the oper-ations when users edit ontology to test the conflicts detection and resolution and up-date operations. Experiments show that it is feasible to detect and resolve conflicts through utilizing our methods and the time-consuming is acceptable.
