The Eastern Miscellany was founded in the late Qing Dynasty as a magazine, spanning multiple important periods in the history of modern China in 45 years from 1904 to 1948, becoming the witness and recorder of modern and contemporary China, which has very important research value.In 1915, Youth magazine, the predecessor of New Youth was published, raised the banner of science and democracy, the New Culture Movement began. The circle of culture and ideology and the whole domestic political environment began to change. The feudal ideology began to collapse, and people’s thoughts began to liberate. More and more intellectuals, a person with breadth of vision put themselves into the dissemination of new ideas and new culture. In 1919, the failure of China’s diplomacy on the Paris Peace Conference leading to the May 4th movement. The May 4th movement not only led the thoughts of "democracy" and "science" step more deeply into people’s mind, but also made the patriotic spirit of anti imperialist of anti feudalism get very good development, becoming a watershed in the old democratic revolution and the new democratic revolution. In 1921, the Communist Party of China was founded, ushered in a new era in the history of China. Since then, China’s revolution take on an altogether new aspect. It can be said that the May 4th Movement" period is the starting point of China from "the old times" to "the new times", and the particularly important pages of Chinese history.The purpose of this thesis is to study the development condition of The Eastern Miscellany in "the May 4th movement" period. The Eastern Miscellany is recorded in the history of journalism as a representative of the "conservative" culture against new youth as the "progress" one, however its contribution in historical period of China’s democratic politics, science, culture and academic development is to be reckoned with. The year this thesis began(2014) coincided with the 110 th anniversary of The Eastern Miscellany and 2015 is the 100 th anniversary of the new culture movement began. Hope to take this opportunity to uncover the history of The Eastern Miscellany a hundred years ago, and restore the true situation, and summarize its characteristics and development experience, in order to provide reference for the development of contemporary media.This thesis mainly uses the methods of literature analysis, mainly by literature analysis method of statistics analysis, content analysis, secondary analysis, historical comparative analysis method to perform statistical analysis and qualitative analysis. The main materials used are 1915(18) to 1921(18) of The Eastern Miscellany and The Eastern Miscellany’s Catalogue, etc.This research is mainly divided into five parts, the first part is the overview introduction for The Eastern Miscellany; the Second part is the development background of The Eastern Miscellany in "the May 4th movement" period, and this part includes two aspects of subjective and objective, which objectively mainly refers to the historical background at that time(including two aspects of international and domestic) and the media environment background, mainly refers to the subjective The Eastern Miscellany own development background, reflect on editor changing; The third part is of "the May 4th movement" period of The Eastern Miscellany content analysis, mainly dividing into "the focus of democratic political ideas spread", "the attention to scientific and cultural ideas", "study on the academic point of view", and "advertising development" the four aspects; The fourth most of "the May 4th movement" period in the form of The Eastern Miscellany analysis, divided into "Magazine column form", "content presentation", "sources" these three aspects; The fifth part is the conclusion of this paper.
