The Eastern Miscellany is one of the most important publications of the Commercial Press and is the most long-lived comprehensive journal in the 20th century in China.The Eastern Miscellany lasted nearly forty-six years,with a total of 44 volumes,which went through the Constitutional Movement,the Revolution of 1911,the New Culture Movement,the National Revolution,the War of Resistance Against Japan and the War of Liberation,and experienced the special period of turmoil.The magazine reflected the development of Chinese society in the first half of the twentieth century,and was called the model to record the time of late Ding Dynasty and Republic of China.The Eastern Miscellany aims to guide the people,focuses on the study of domestic and foreign issues,introduces new knowledge and spreads cultures.It is an encyclopedic publication.The special issues of The Eastern Miscellany followed the objectives of the publication,closely followed the development of the pulse of the times,realized a leap of breadth and depth and created magnificent style.The special issues of The Eastern Miscellany conform to the trend of the times.However,they did not draw enough attention in a very long time and lacked of research from the perspective of combining macroscopic method with microscopic method.It is a pity.To study the special issues of The Eastern Miscellany can help us to understand the editorial idea of this journal,which is the significance of studying the modern magazines.Based on the analysis of the contents of the special issues of The Eastern Miscellany,this paper studies the special issues by the method of content analysis and literature research to discuss the characteristics of the topic planning,layout and contents.This paper explores its historical achievements in the dissemination of modern cultural information and academic research.This will not only expand the field of vision about modern periodical research,but also provide useful experience and enlightenment for the development of current newspapers and periodicals.This paper takes all the special issues of The Eastern Miscellany as its research objects and is divided into six parts.The first part introduces the background of the magazine and the emergence and contents of the special issues.The second part is the detailed analysis of the three special types of special issues of The Eastern,Miscellany,and summarizes the characteristics of the contents from the topic,contents and layout.This is one of the key chapters of this paper.The third part focuses on some special issues such as Einstein,the research of peasants,the research of the constitution memorial edition of the new year.The fourth and fifth part discusses the characteristics of the special issues,analyzes the features of editing and publishing and the art of communication.The last is the analysis of the value of the special issues of The Eastern Miscellany.As an important modern comprehensive periodical,the special issues of The Eastern Miscellany have an inspiring meaning to the current periodical development.The analysis in this paper may enrich the research about The Eastern Miscellany and obtain a more clear and comprehensive understanding of the magazine.
