On March 11,2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in the northeastern Japan at the Pacific Ocean offshore. The subsequent tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident brought heavy casualties and became one of the most disastrous losses in the history of Japan. The overwhelming influence of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the relevant discussion on the problem of nuclear utilization are unprecedented in the history of Japan. Japan had extensive media coverage at home and abroad, arousing worldwide attention. The press had mixed comments on Japanese media in reporting this disaster. This thesis adopte the methods of media observation, literature review, and case analysis. The major content of this study is to test whether the Japanese media has observed or flouted the journalistic professionalism spirit in reporting the 311 East Japan Great Earthquake and nuclear disaster accident.Based on the analysis, following conclusions might be drawn:Japanese media coverage of the earthquake and tsunami is largely in line with the requirements of journalistic professionalism. In particular, the news practice under the guidance of serve-the-people-and responsibility-oriented journalistic professionalism has developed to a new stage. The deviation of journalistic professionalism concentrates on nuclear power and nuclear radiation accident reports, which greatly reduces the consciousness of responsibility in the essence of the reality, objectivity, independence and the public service.By basically thinking deeply about how to prepare for disaster reported problems, journalistic professionalism is the important standard for testing the success of disaster reports. Journalists need to follow the spirit of journalistic professionalism, regarding the authenticity as the primary criteria of disaster news reports, the public service as the target of disaster news report, the humanistic care as the style of the disaster news report, and the verification report as a continuation of disaster news reports.
