More and more users deploy and run their applications on the cloud platform. These applications consists of various kinds of distributed components, which makes the management task quite complex. The major technology focuses more on stat-ic deployment than dynamic management. We propose an approach integrated with model-driven engineering and configuration management to manage cloud application through its runtime model and verified the effectiveness of this approach via managing popular distributed systems. Our work involves the following aspects in detail:1. We propose an abstract modeling approach for cloud applications to define the virtual hardware resources, distributed components, relationships and operations, and enables component extension and composition.2. We propose an mechanism to manage cloud applications dynamically via its run-time model, the synchronization engine synchronizes the operations in runtime model to cloud application and return the execution results.3. We propose a portable management operation method, which is based on config-uration management. The operations of application are defined in configuration management language to realize portable management.4. We implement a model-based cloud application management system, and apply it to popular distributed systems, deploy the basic functionalities, add compo-nents and composite components to verify its effectiveness.
