With the rapid development of economy, environmental pollution becomes more and more serious. Various pollutants not only pollute Natural water and harm the ecosystem environment, but also threaten people’s drinking water. For the purpose of drinking water quality supervision, a photoelectric synthetic toxicity detector is designed. Prototype of the detector is constructed. Experimental testing results are then presented.The toxicity detector is used in drinking water safety testing, which also can be used for food testing and environmental toxicity testing. By comparing and analyzing the various detection methods in the field of toxicity testing, bioluminescence is chosen as the detection means. The luciferin-luciferase reaction system may emit fluorescence, while the existence of toxic substances will suppress the luminous intensity. Then the intensity of toxicity has been converted to bioluminescent intensity signals. By calculating the luminescence inhibition, toxic intensity may be obtained. Because the inhibition is the reaction of organisms to toxic substances, this detection is synthetic bio-toxicity detection.Based on bio-luminescence, a toxicity detector designed includes the luminous intensity signal detection module with a photomultiplier tubes as detecting element, the two-stage amplifier circuit and the associated filter circuits, the analog-digital conversion module, the magnification adjustment module and the gear selection module. Toxic intensity information can be gained with supporting of the control module and software. The lower machine communicates with PC via serial interface, realizing data transmission and storage, conduct response curve drawing and data analysis.The experimental results demonstrate that the prototype detector is able to detect the synthetic bio-toxicity quickly and accurately. The reaction time is less than 1 minute, and 1mg / L toxic substances can be detected.
