In recent years, it becomes possible to realize remote monitoring and image gathering using the embedded linux system to provide flexile solutions. Due to the importance of its application background, we design . an embedded Linux system using the s3c2410 platform. The system gathers images using a linux supported USB camera followed by image compressing and displaying.At first, we briefly introduce the hardware of the system. The hardware is composed by the kernel and bottom board. The kernel board includes a s3c2410 chip, a 64MB SDRAM, a 64M nandflash and a 2MB norflash., The SDRAM provide space for the operating system and application programs, ant the nandFlash is used to save the Bootloader, the image of the Linux operating system and the application programs. The bottom board includes various circuits for periphery interfaces, such as the serial ports, MCI interface, USB port, ETHERNET data exchange, JTAG port, video and audio ports, etc.Then this thesis discuss related techniques: how to build the compile environment, transplant of the Linux kernel, compile and transplant of vivi, rewrite the driver programs of the LCD, development of the application software and so on. We emphasize the software development part, including how to realize real time gathering, display, compressing the JPEG images incorporating the Video41inux API. The corresponding key data structures are also given.The debugging and experimental results are shown at the end of the dissertation. To conclude this design project, we also discuss its limitation, as well as the possible improvement of this design in the near future. The design follows the standard flow chart of embedded systems, has a certain practical value.
