During the past decade, with the booming Chinese economy, we have seen a sharplyincrease in the number of Chinese overseas student abroad. In fact, the number of Chinesestudents are ranking first among all overseas students in Australia. However, studies showthat Chinese overseas student abroad are generally facing severe psychological problem andsocial difficulties. Living in Sydney, under totally different cultural backgrounds, Chineseoverseas students have different socialising needs and characteristics than the youth in China.With the development of information technology, the functionalities of mobile media arealso greatly enhanced, so strong that it has already became the first choice of modern youthswhen it comes to day to day communication with the rest of the world. In that case, aquestion arises: What kind of influence is the fast growing mobile media exerting on thesocial life of Chinese overseas students?After extensive observations, surveys and interviews, the author discovered that mobilemedias have proved its great helpfulness in assisting Chinese overseas students at getting useto the new life style, at same time, presenting some short comings on other aspects such asthe over reliance of Chinese back grounded communication applications causing socialseparation with the main stream culture; problems in overcoming cultural difficulties whenutilizing foreign communication applications; the lacking of interactivities in Sydney basedChinese mobile media.Generally speaking, Sydney based Chinese overseas students obtained a certain amountof help from the development of mobile media in improving their social life, yet, there isroom for further improvement, like mobile media being more focused on its interactivability. All in all, social problems of overseas students are important issues and should not beover looked, however, solving the question once and for all needs the attention of a vastmajority as well as their collaborated effort in specially designing mobile medias that morefits the characteristics of Chinese overseas student.
