Virtual reality technology, which is referred to as the VR technology, is a newsimulation technology developed in recent years. Virtual reality builds athree-dimensional virtual scene by using computers, allowing users to achievehuman-computer interaction by means of external devices, giving users an immersivenew experience. Virtual reality technology as a very practical cutting-edge technologyhas been widely used in many fields of medicine, aerospace, interior design, virtualassembly and industrial simulation. This technology generates substantial economicbenefits.The full name of XPS extruded boards is the extruded polystyrene foam boards.These boards put polystyrenes as raw materials, coupling pigments, flame retardantsand blowing agents and other materials. After mixed and heated, these liquatedmaterials are extruded by an extruder machine under the condition of high pressureextrusion after then processed to generate rigid foam plastic boards. XPS extrudedboards have excellent thermal insulation effect, high compressive strength, excellentperformance of higher water absorption and high stability, widely used in buildinginsulation and waterproof, the ground floor of buildings, civil engineering, citydecoration and other industries.For the high complexity of XPS extruded boards production equipments, it isextremely difficult for technicians to grasp their structure and working principle.Based on virtual reality technology, a virtual reality platform about XPS extrudedboards production process is developed with VRML, Cult3D, Dreamweaver and Javaetc. The platform adopts human-computer interaction interface. On the one hand, itcan help companies train staffs quickly and improve the level of the production andmanagement of technicians. On the other hand, it plays an important role instrengthening the company’s opening-up and technical cooperation, enhancing thecompany’s overall image, promoting the company’s products and enhancing thecompany’s core competitiveness and so on.At first, the features and classifications of virtual reality technology, the mainresearch contents and the technical route of the subject are introduced. Furthermore,the features, uses and production process of XPS extruded boards are described. Theparts of the equipments are measured. The production line virtual models are constructed with Creo and these model codes are simplified with VrmlPad. Theproduction process of XPS extruded boards are simulated with human-computerinteraction technology, roaming technology and collision detection technology. At last, avirtual reality platform of XPS extruded boards production process is developed basedon web technology.
