In recent years, multimedia services have gained a lot of popularity with the development ofInternet. This growth is mainly because of video streaming services. Video streaming services aremainly divided into two parts: IPTV and OTT. HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) technique isbecoming one of the key points for OTT video streaming. At present, the major HAS projects are asfollows, Adobe ’s HTTP Dynamic Streaming, Microsoft ’s Smooth Streaming and Apple ’s HTTPLive Streaming. This article mainly studies the key technologies in adaptive streaming over HTTP.Firstly, this article introduces the principles of streaming media. Then, it focus on Microsoft’sSmooth Streaming and Apple‘s HTTP Live Streaming, studying the key techniques, the containerformats, the principles of media-split and the popular algorithms of HAS. At last, it proposes animproved adaptive algorithm, the algorithm puts forward an accutate method for estimating thecurrent available bandwidth. The simulation results show that, compared with the old algorithm, theimproved algotithm can better adapt to the current status of the network bandwith, and enhance theuser experience to a greater extent.Secondly, this paper improves the server architecture of HLS and SS system. It uses Nginx to bethe server, adding modules to support Mp4and TS streaming.Compared with the old server, thenew server has a better expansibility, and it can support different systems. The new server uses littlesystem resources and has a better ability to handle the burst tasks. The test results show that, theimproved server can support the two popular system, showing users better experiences.
