Research On The Safety Of UMTS-GSM Mobile Networks

In recent years, with the rapid development of mobile networks, mobile communication technology has been used all over the world and in all aspects of our everyday life. But with the popularity of mobile network, the security issues it raises are also attracting more and more attention. Security problems such as illegal wiretapping, phone hacking, and fake base stations already affect people’s lives. If they are not controlled and prevented properly, they may cause great harm in our society.In this paper, the developing safety precautions in mobile networks are analyzed and studied, especially those with3G network elements but not purely3G networks. Some kinds of attacks against these networks are discussed, and several classical security enhancement measures are analyzed and verified.On the basis of these security enhancement measures, two new improved security enhancement measures are proposed.With the populization of the third generation and the coming of the fourth generation mobile network, the security problems which the integration of the different generations of mobile networks brings have become au urgent issue. The main work and research achievement of this paper are shown as fellow:(1) The development of the mobile networks and the evolution of their security measures are described. Security enhancement measurements are analyzed.(2) Security risks in mixed mobile networks are studied, with some existing attacks against them described and analyzed. The authentication proceed in GSM-UMTS network are analyzed with BAN logic.And also the vulnerability of the UMTS-GSM network has been verified using OPNET.(3) A detailed analysis of the existing security enhancement measures has been carried out, and its feasibility has also been verified. Then the operability, security and other aspects of the enhancement measures are compared and discussed.(4) On the basis of the existing security enhancement solutions, two new improved security enhancement slolutions are proposed. One of these two solutions is verified by OPNET, while security level are analyzed using BAN logic. Feasibility, operationality and so on are compared with the existing solutions.
