With the improvement of network technology and terminal handling capacity, People put forward new demands for videos coding. While the ISO/IEC MPEG and IUT-T VCEG formally joint and develop the next-generation video codec standard HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) since April2010, and the first edition of the standard was finalized in January2013, the compression performance compared with H.264/AVC, performance is greatly improved.This paper firstly introduces the developmentof video coding standards and finalization of HEVC. Then the characteristics and application of I fram in video encoding and transmission as well as the current research on HEVC algorithm are described. Especially we emphasized the importance of intra prediction in HEVC. Next the encoding structure and main technologys in HEVC are presented.This paper start to research from two aspects:the improved prediction to enhance the performance and the fast intra algorithm to save the coding time.First, the intra prediction based on mathematical statistic training and classification for DC and PLANAR mode is proposed. And the proposed template matching method also helps to improve the performance of intra coding. Second, in order to reduce the complexcity of algorithm, pre-partition of CU by use of the sobel edge dectection and the candidateangle modes collective based on gradient statistics are used to speed up the intra prediction process. Last, intra part of real time encoding software called MTC265for HEVC is presented.
