With the development of science and technology, the digital video processing technology has become a hot research topic. With the widely applying of H.264/AVC, the Moving Picture Experts Groups (MPEG) and the Video Coding Experts Groups (VCEG) have worked together to develop a new generation of video coding---High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), to achieve better compressive efficiency. HEVC has been formally established in January2013as an international standard. With the development of the HEVC, the project of3D-HEVC, based on HEVC, has been conducted by the Joint Collaborative Team on3D Video Coding Extension Development (JCT-3V).The Multi-view Video plus Depth (MVD) with two or more views and associated per-pixel depth data components is adopted in3D-HEVC. After decoding the video and depth data, the Depth-Image-Based Rendering (DIBR) is utilized to generate the virtual view image, used for displaying3D content on an auto-stereoscopic display. Compared with HEVC, the increasing amount of the view and the associated depth data increase the complexity and computation load of the3D-HEVC.In view of limited color samples in depth map, this paper presents a novel fast intra coding scheme based on Base Colors and Index Map (BCIM) to reduce the complexity of coding depth map effectively. In order to obtain better performance, this paper not only adopts a reasonable method to segment the depth map, but also remaps the index map. Furthermore, the Base Colors are coded by a predictive coding to improve the compression efficiency. Compared with the intra prediction coding in DMM, the experimental results illustrate that the proposed scheme provides an average decrease in run time for intra prediction coding of50.7%. Meanwhile the BD-Rate increase is negligible for the virtual intermediate views generated by the Depth-Image-Based Rendering.
