Dense deployment is adopted in wireless communication networks to meet the ever increasing demand for services, which also causes great energy consumption for telecom operators. Recently, the information and communication technology (ICT) industry has sharply increased the awareness and demand for energy saving. As one of the key technology trends from LTE to LTE-Advanced, self-organized network (SON) technology takes energy saving as one of its important use cases to be studied and discussed.3GPP started the standardization for energy saving from Release10, and a great many of analysis and algorithms are worked out from the section of academic, but there are still many open questions to be solved. For example, how to make heterogeneous networks come into/out of dormant mode, as well as to design energy-efficient architecture for radio access network and networking methods. For those reasons, this thesis focuses on the basic theory, standardization and scheme design of energy saving technology in LTE-Advanced system. The overall goal is to deploy the network elements adaptively and dynamically according to user demand, also enhance the network architecture through periodic monitoring, network planning and so on. Two aspects are considered to fulfill energy saving: reducing energy consumption and interference.A service-adaptive energy saving mechanism based on sleep mode in LTE-Advanced relay system is proposed. The sleep interval of relays can be adjusted adaptively according to the demand of multi-service and cell load, which can reduce the power for listening while ensuring relays under control. System requirements for implementing the mechanism are also discussed. Simulation results validate the advantage of our scheme, for the frequency of wake-up listening by relays is reduced significantly in contrast with conventional fixed sleep interval mechanism.Considering the characters of heterogeneous networks, we propose an energy-efficient hierarchical deployment and operation scheme. The theoretical analysis and simulation verification for energy efficiency are adopted, as well as the standardization enhancement to support that scheme. We have also studied the green evolution for the architecture of wireless networks and networking methods. A traffic-adaptive networking scheme based on baseband equipment with large-scale processing ability is proposed, which can be adaptive according to the variation of coverage and traffic, decreases power consumption and interference in the network, and improves spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency through centralized management and resource sharing among network elements.
