Wireless sensor and actuator network is the basic network of the Internet of Things. It is composed of a large number of miniature sensors and actuators with capabilities of data acquisition, data processing and wireless communication. With the increase of complexity of application in WSAN and user requirement about environment information, scalar information, multimedia information and other information need to be introduced into the network. In the large-scale wireless sensor and actuator network, the switch between scalar information collection and multimedia information requires lots of human resources and hardware resources. Dynamic upgrade can dynamically configure a lot of sensor nodes and update a single node’s program through remote server. It is particularly suitable for sensor nodes’upgrade in wireless sensor and actuator network.At present, the research of sensor nodes rapidly develops in wireless sensor and actuator network. However, sensor node function is simple and rarely able to combine scalar information collection with multimedia information collection because of the bandwidth constraints. In the meantime, there are no suitable solutions for single sensor update and dynamic configuration of all nodes. Therefore, this article uses data compression for audio data processing to improve the transmission efficiency of multimedia information. Combining the dynamic upgrade technology with wireless communication achieves the dynamic downloading and upgrade of single node (sensor node or control node). It can change and expand collection, processing and transmission functions to use dynamic upgrade, thus we complete the design and implementation of multi-functional wireless sensor nodes. This paper research the multi-functional sensor node for the simple situation of sensor node function in wireless sensor and actuator network, and design the multi-function wireless sensor node which supports the collection of a variety of data types and dynamic update. Firstly, the paper introduces wireless sensor and actuator network and dynamic upgrade technology background. Secondly, it describes the structure of multi-functional wireless sensor node, including hardware design, software design and test program design. Finally, it tests multi-functional wireless sensor node and put forward improvement program.
