The development of automotive industry has always suffered from the promotion of electronic information technology advances. The major manufacturers pay attention to telematics service based on technology of mobile communication and satellite location. Telematics which incorporates information and entertainment functions not only broaden consumers to obtain and process information, and allow consumers to access safe and convenience services more easily. As telematics system information service requirements develop, and terminal hardware cost decreases, operating system software proportion become bigger, a full functional, stable and compatible software operating system, that is easy to develop and maintain and update and to support the operation of embedded terminal hardware system, is particularly important.The construction of the software and hardware environment for this platform, location function module, navigation function module and location-sharing function modules are described in this paper. Vehicle navigation platform is designed based on Android operating systems and ARM microprocessor, by transplanting Android open operating system, completing custom optimization with system, and achieving system platform building. GPS and GPRS/3G are the important technologies for the development of the vehicle navigation system, this paper make a detailed analysis for real-time location, map matching algorithm, electronic map display update, navigation algorithm and location sharing. Especially for the huge intermediate data that Dijkstra algorithm produces, we use same grid size to divide the electronic map data, change grid data table to simple data table to improve response speed of path planning.After completing system module, we do some test for function and performance of system. In function testing, function modules run normally, the stability, safety, restorative and portability reach requirements. In performance testing, the accuracy and time of positioning, map display time have certain advantages. The accuracy of map matching is higher than other system. The time and memory required by the shortest path planning has been improved.The application platform can be embedded into other terminal equipment such as mobile phones, and so on. Using the design scheme and combined with Android system interface can be suitable for developing various embedded GIS information platform, and this design has good portability and expansibility. This design provides some new application ideas for vehicle navigation system through the existing techniques, and has a certain application value.
