Telematics is a compounded word composed of Telecommunication and Informatics, and is usually translated as in-vehicle remote telecommunication informatics system. The definition of Telematics is one kind of service system that provides information services via an integrated system consisting of in-vehicle terminal, wireless telecommunication device, GPS and Internet. It combines advanced technologies of automotive, telecommunication and IT, and is regarded as the third automotive revolution in the twentieth century.Shanghai General Motors first introduced telematics system on SLS Cadillac vehicle in the fourth quarter, 2009, and provided over twenty services covering safety and security, navigation and hands-free calling these three major sections. The customers will enjoy free Telematics services for free in one year after car purchasing. Shanghai General Motors plans to apply telematics services on all Cadillac vehicles and gradually extends to major Buick and Chevrolet vehicles. This thesis studies the defects of navigation and information services, analyses the root cause, designs optimized proposal, accomplish advanced development to validate the feasibility and evaluate the actual effects. The study scope of this thesis includes the navigation and information service principle of Shanghai General Motors'Telematics system, domestic Telematics development environment, optimized proposal design, and corresponding development on in-vehicle terminal, wireless transmission protocol, call center and data center. The improvement proposal shows excellent effects in real testing cases. In case of navigation service, the maneuver data volume is severely reduced, and thus avoids recalculating routes due to users'driving during data downloading, and makes full use of in-vehicle soundworks. In case of information service, the actual advantages include non-occupying call center resources, low usage cost, repeating on demand, better sound effects and additional display on in-vehicle entertainment system.
