The arrival of the information age has had influence on many aspects. For art design, the newway of design makes people think more. As for the new way of artistic design, the application oftechnologies and digital technology in the field of artistic design is also becoming more andmore popular and widespread. The manifestation and entertainment, which are closely related toartistic design, are also becoming more and more diversified and high-tech following the trend ofthe times. And with the rapid progress and innovation of the film-television industry and gameindustry that go hand in hand with people’s daily life, the design forms used for the most majorcomponent of film, television, and game works, i.e. characters, are becoming more and morediversified as well. As a result, not only character images in the traditional form have a deeperdevelopment and change, virtual images created by electronic devices also become moreexaggerated and complicated. Therefore, there is an urgent demand for profound researches inthree-dimensional characters design.In the field of film and television and games, new technology applications promote thedevelopment of virtual scene’s representation, hence the design is no longer limited bytechnological means. Also, the long-term progress of design philosophy pushes forward thepractical application and innovation of3D virtual technology, which means the brand newconcept and realizable methods for characters design in3D animated films and3D gameswithout any technological limitations any more. It is also because of this that there is animprovement of the stylization and subdivision of the design within the same area. For thisreason, the characters of3D animated films and3D games, although belong to the same area of3D character design, have been more detailed and integrated than before.In regard to3D animated films, we are more focused on the realization of a variety ofunrestrained and creative imaginations, presenting different visual experiences that may be eitherlifelike or visional. We are trying to use all kinds of design rules and principles to show thecharacteristics and features of a character. In a film, the screenplay plays a particularly importantrole since a character cannot contradict the overall style of a script work. No matter it is atraditional motion picture or a3D animated film or any other forms of film, as long as it is within the range of the film, we shall follow the thread of the story, making the character really live inthe world of the script and at the same time appropriately express his or her corresponding worldview. Therefore, the general principle of the3D film role design is to ensure that the story ismore complete and the deduction more harmonious, so as to achieve the effect of pleasure oredutainment.When it comes to the design of3D game characters, we mainly consider the fixed attributesand rules in the game set. The restrictions of the hardware in a game are various. Under such asituation, we shall do anything we can to demonstrate a character accord with the hardwarecondition in different hypothetical scenarios as much as possible, which asks for a feasibilityinvestigation at the beginning of the design.Notwithstanding that3D animated film character design and3D game character design bothbelong to character design, we shall make clear of different principles and abide by different orsame rules. Hence we need to theoretically and systematically differentiate their relationships sothat we can better solve problems confronted in design and manufacture.
