Along with the computer hardware technology as well as the computer software technology, in particular development of the image graph technology,the three dimensional animation technology in domains of film, television stunt, game, education and scientific research has become gradually one kind of brand-new and essential method. Through the many types of computer animation, character animation is one of the most popular kinds because of its advantage on representing the character's motion.Character rigging is a key step to the character animation making。A good rigging system, the foundation of the animation of high quality, helps an animator to accomplish the animation making more efficiently and guarantees his excellent performance in animation production.My work in the animation making for many years teaches me that the present industry of animation production is lacking in a mature and scientific rigging process, good principles of design guiding rigging system as well as standards in quality evaluation. As a result, efficiency is low and mistakes make frequent appearances in rigging process. The quality of character rigging system cannot be evaluated in a right way and its process and outcome cannot be guided and controlled efficiently. Moreover, a required character control system of high quality cannot be set up.The research of this paper, based on one classic three-dimensional animation software, starting from the theoretical foundation of character animation skills and knowledge, makes use of knowledge in many aspects such as anatomy, kinematics and UI design and conducts an exhaustive analysis of the methods and skills of setting up character rigging system in animated film production. The paper sets up scientific procedures for character rigging and analyzes some problems which major procedures are facing and then raises the corresponding solutions. The paper also raises a principle of design guiding rigging system and a standard in quality evaluation, which enable people to guide and control character rigging and to evaluate the quality of rigging in a just and scientific way. Finally, the paper accomplishes a cartoon character rigging system and it proves that the research made by this paper meets the requirement of the production of 3D animation character.The fruits in research made by this paper are as follows:Describing the related contents and fields of computer animation synthetically, and introduced the development process of domestic computer animation.Setting up a set of sound and scientific character rigging procedures, pursuing some research into some relevant skills required in each part of rigging procedures and the optimization and improvement of those skills.Raising some principles of design in rigging system and standards in quality evaluation with the aim of guiding and regulating character rigging procedures.Under the guideline of the research made by this paper, it also improves the rigging methods in the light of some particular requirements of present animated cartoons and accomplishes a character rigging system which meets the requirements of cartoons in special styles.
