In the context of globalization, TV simultaneous interpreting is playing a growingly significant role. However, TV simultaneous interpreting experienced a late start in China: research on it is not comprehensive, and the quality is also quite uneven. Based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory, this paper adopts the perspective of the expectations and satisfaction of the TV audience to explore the deficiencies with TV simultaneous interpreting in China and propose suggestions for improvement.The paper first introduces the definition, features and challenges of TV simultaneous interpreting, followed by an explanation of the audience-oriented Uses and Gratifications Theory. The author holds that knowing audience demands and learning their feedbacks help improve program quality. Previous studies mostly focus on the role of inteipreter, yet the author believes that TV simultaneous interpreter has a dual role to play, i.e. broadcaster and interpreter. Therefore, the performance of TV simultaneous interpreters should meet the respective requirements of the two roles.In order to learn about audience expectations and evaluation of TV simultaneous interpreting, the author conducted a survey among40viewers. The author came up with12criteria in line with the requirements for broadcasters and interpreters. The40respondents were required to rate the importance of the12criteria. Then, they were asked to watch the video of CCTV’s live simultaneous interpreting on Obama’s announcement of Bin Laden’s death in2011, and then graded the performance of the interpreters.Finally, the paper proposes several suggestions for both TV interpreters and TV stations. Interpreters are suggested to improve their delivery, enhance their pressure resilience capacity, enrich their knowledge and receive voice training. TV stations, on the other hand, should offer a favorable working environment, conduct research on audience demand and expectation, and train professional TV interpreters.
