Renumbering, i.e., changes in the IP addressing information of various network components. In the simplest of definitions, the exercise of renumbering a network consists of changing the IP host addresses, and perhaps the network mask, of each device within the network that has an address associated with it. The popularity of connecting to the global Internet over the course of the past several years has spawned new problems. Renumbering problem is one of these problems. Renumbering is likely to become more and more widespread and common, but the process of network renumbering can’t be completed easily, because of involving all kinds of components in network, no matter network devices or IP address items.Firstly, the existing background and research status of IPv6renumbering issues are analyzed, including the reasons for network renumbering, the study necessity on renumbering and the major issues of renumbering. Then the IETF workgroups relating network renumbering and their research results are introduced. Network must complete four main parts of renumbering process, which include prefixes management, address configuration management, updating relevant address entries and renumbering event management, and research focuses are visualized by describing this four parts in detail. Besides, a detailed procedure that should be used to renumber a IPv6network from one prefix to another is described and by this procedure IPv6network can complete renumbering with minimal impact.Renumbering process includes prefixes management, address configuration management, updating relevant address entries and renumbering event management, all steps of the four parts is described in detail, and so do the relating stadands and mechanisms. And some problems which the relating stadands and mechanisms can’t resolve are analyzed, this analysis can lay a foundation for new solutions. The research focus of this thesis is the solution of host address configuration problems in IPv6network renumbering. IPv6hosts can automaticly config their addresses by two ways, which are SLAAC and DHCPv6. Sometimes the two address configuration modes may be both available in one network, and in the process of renumbering the network may need achieving DHCPv6/SLAAC address configuration switching for host renumbering. But there is no DHCPv6/SLAAC cooperation specification now, so the above switching can’t complete. For testing and verifying this issue, a IPv6experimental network is built, this experimental network is described in detail in this thesis. To solve DHCPv6/SLAAC switching issue, a DHCPv6/SLAAC cooperation mechanism is proposed, whicn control the address configuration of IPv6host through defining new flag in the resered field of RA message. Lastly this mechanism is realized by reworking source codes of quagga software and Linux kernel and then the mechanism is tested in the above experimental network. At last, it has carried on the summary to the DHCPv6/SLAAC cooperation mechanism, and the improving space of IPv6relating stadands and methanisms.
