Passive optical network (PON) has been widely accepted as one of the best broadbandaccess network technologies, while the hybrid time/wavelength division multiplexing passiveoptical network (TDM/WDM hybrid PON) is a promising solution in the transition time of curentTDM PON to the future WDM PON due to its combination both advanteges of network capacityand implementation expense. This thesis presents a comprehensive research on energy efficiencytechnology in hybrid TDM/WDM PON networks with theoriatical analysis and simulations.Firstly, this thesis gives a brief introduction of the main technology in optical access networkand the existing energy efficient schemes. An improved TDM/WDM hybrid PON networkstructure and energy efficicent technology is proposed. On the OLT side, the improved schemeadopting the channel combine/split (CCS) module to make the ONU and OLT communicate eachother come which belongs to different TDM PON networks. While there are relativedly feweractive ONU users, the improved schemes can reduce the whole energy consumption by shut downsome system components. The improved scheme introduced an ONU data packet buffer basedenergy conservation strategy support ONU sleeping technology. OLT can guarantee just one activeONU occupying upstream channel in a fixed polling cycle, and other ONUs switching to a lowpower sleep state by which total energy consumption can be reduced significantly.
