The Ethernet has been in a dominant position in the local area network since it cameout in the1970s. In the past ten years, the rate of Ethernet grows speedly from10MB/s to10GB/s, which promotes the Ethernet to develop in the metropolitan area network. But,lack of high reliability protection mechanism, prevents the Ethernet to be widely applied inmetropolitan area network. Therefor, how to improve the reliability of Ethernet, short thetime of the protection switching, is an urgent problem to solve.Based on the Ethernet ring protection switching basic knowledge, this paper analysesthe model and several fault detection method of Ethernet protection switching. Then thispaper compares and analyzes the application status, technical characteristics, advantagesand disadvantages of several Ethernet protection technologys.This paper focuses on the research of ITU-T G.8032protocol.It studies the IUT-TG.8032protocol, including the fault detection mechanism and the principle of the protocol.The protocol defined the multi-ring model in its revised edition, which puts forward theconcept of the main ring, sub-ring and virtual link. In the protocol, it defines a protectionmechanise when a ring only has one link failed. However, in the reality network, it ispossible that there are two links failed in the ring. If this condition happens, thecommunication between users will be breaked off. In order to improve the reliability ofEthernet ring network, this paper studys how to protect the network when two or morelinks fail. And it puts forward an enhanced Ethernet ring protection switching method. Itmainly puts forwad a method on how to detection and recorver the vitrual link.Itresearches and implements the protection mechanism of single ring, polycyclic, singledomain, domain and so on many kinds of loop topology. In the end, this paper describesthe implementation and test results of the protocol, the final test results show that, thescheme is feasible.
