Design Patterns originated from the field of architectural design, with the purpose of providingeffective solutions for common design problems. Design patterns are based on existing designexperiences. A pattern takes advantage of the experience and results of previous design problem. The thinking of Design Patterns emphasizes solving design problems with consideration of theproblem context. In recent years, handheld mobile devices has been developing quickly. Smart phones, digitalmusic players and other devices have been widely spread in the world, being used in a largepopulation. With the rapid development, the interface design of these devices also changes quicklyand frequently. In order to meet the development needs, this research explored the ways of usingdesign patterns for the interface design of handheld mobile devices. Using Human-CenteredDesign theory and design pattern theory, with the methods of literature reading and analysis, ethnography observations/interviews and case study, this research has proposed a design patternlibrary and a design framework for the interface design of handheld mobile devices. Designers andinterface design researchers can follow the process of the framework to support their design work.
