Our country is promoting analog-digital conversion of broadcast television vigorously, whichwill release a large number of ultra high frequency (UHF) resources. The next generationbroadcast-wireless (NGB-W) network will use the important spectrum resources effectively, andthrough the convergence of broadcast and communication networks to optimize the transmission ofwireless information services. On the other side, from the view of green communication, energyefficiency (EE) has more and more become one of the performance metrics of wireless network.However, the energy efficiency problem of broadcast and communication converged network inresearch literatures is rare at home and abroad, also the strengths and weaknesses of the newconverged network compare to traditional single communication network in energy efficiency havenot been overall analyzed and evaluated. Aiming at this problem, the paper depends on the projectof Shanghai Research Institude, Chinese Academic of Science–the National High TechnologyResearch and Development Program of China (863Program)“Next Generation BroadcastTelevision Network Broadband Wireless Access Technology Research”, researches the energyefficiency problem of broadcast and communication converged network, and proposes feasibilitymethods to improve energy efficiency by theoretical study.First, the paper aiming at the various interference problems between time division long termevolution (TD-LTE) system and broadband television system which work on the same and differentfrequency, obtains the certain constraints on geographical seperation and operation band seperationbetween LTE base station and digital television tower under minimum signal strength detection.Then, under the concluded constraints, the number results of geographical separation and operationband separation between LTE system and broadband television system were calculated, making thesystems in same or different frequency can coexist with effective communication.Then, a novel system model and an analysis method were proposed to research the energyefficiency of broadcast and communication converged network. From the perspective of the users’request, the businesses were classified as the popular part and the non-popular part. Further basedon the random spatial network model, broadcast tower, cellular base station and user models of theconverged network were built. By considering the coverage of broadcast network and the outageprobability of cellular network, a closed-form expression of the converged network energyefficiency was derived, and the impact of popular business probability to energy efficiency was further discussed. Based on the mentioned converged system model, the simulation results showthat energy efficiency of converged network will be significantly improved compare to the singlecellular network while the probability of popular businesses is more than5%. The novel systemmodel and energy efficiency analysis method provide reference suggestions to the overallperformance of converged network in the later analysis.
