Time delay is an important parameter for characterizing a signal in many areas,including radar, sonar ranging and communication systems. To estimate the time delaybetween deterministic signals received at two spatially separated sensors accurately andquickly has very important significance to determine the distance, speed, and other relatedparameters. Along with the time delay estimation is widely used in many fields, the methodrequires more consideration of practical factors and the research on this technology alsopresents diversity. In general, if the accuracy of the time delay estimation requires higher,the complexity of the algorithm needs much higher. So it is a challenge to the efficiency ofalgorithm when we estimate and track large-range time-varying delay.This paper presents a new adaptive subsample explicit time delay estimation algorithmthat is well suitable for large-range time-varying delay combined with adaptive algorithmand the theory of fractional delay filters. Simulation and implementation results show thatthis method can obtain fast convergence rate and tens of picoseconds estimation accuracy atlow resource usage.The main work and contributions are as follows:1. Study on the relevant theory of adaptive algorithm and fractional delay filters.Combined with minimum mean square error adaptive algorithm and Farrow fractionaldelay filter structure, an adaptive time-delay estimation method with high precision for thelarge-range time-varying delay was proposed. The theoretical derivations for the relatedparameters in Farrow filters and adaptive algorithm are provided, and the simulation resultsare presented to verify the validity of the design method.2. Design and implement the algorithm base on FPGA. By analyzing the designproject, the paper shows the structure of framework and the design of every module indetail. The simulation results of Modelsim were compared to verify the correctness of thedesign method.
