Light leak degree and close clearance of piston rings affect directly the efficiencyand exhaust emission quality of engines. As large quantities of products withindividually quality testing requirements, the production efficiency and scale of pistonrings have been limited by the drawbacks of manual inspection for a long time. Manyinstitutions have attempted to develop automatic testing equipment of piston rings, butso far there is not a truly successful precedent used in industrial production. If we canfocus on several main specifications of piston rings, and try hard from the aspects oftesting accuracy and efficiency, and the stability and economy of instrument, todevelop targeted instruments that can not only adapt to industrial production field andstand the long-time work, but easily accepted by manufacturer, it would be verymeaningful to promoting the development of piston ring manufacturing.Aiming at promoting the engineering application of automatic testing instrumentof piston rings, and taking the internal combustion engine piston rings with large sizeand automobile engine piston rings with medium size as the research objects, thispaper mainly completed the following work:1. To develop the new type testing instrument for internal combustion enginepiston rings. Starting from the practical experience of the former instrument’sapplication and the new requirements put forward by targeted workshop, we make theperformance of the new type instrument highly improved by redesigning the controlsystem architecture, modifying the mechanical structure of detection unit, improvingthe data acquisition and lighting system, and optimizing its work mode and controlscheme. The new type instrument is qualified for batch testing task in workshop, andhas reached its engineering application level.2. To improve the automatic testing instrument of three-station structure appliedto automobile engine piston rings. Based on the existing studies and experimentalplatform, this paper introduces the design of control and communication program,work mode, mechanical system and measurement method. Then, several keyproblems such as the rotation winding and circular lighting of light leak detectioncamera, stability design of sorting mechanism, and the optimization of testing efficiency are solved emphatically. The instrument’s performance has met thescheming requirements, and it is basically qualified for industrial application.3. To carry out research on embedded testing system for piston ring light leakbased on DSP. In order to solve the rotation winding in the instrument economically,and improve the testing efficiency of light-leaking degree, this paper tries to researchon two kinds of image processing system based on DSP, and progressively elaboratesconstruction of the systems, design of program and algorithm, and experimentaldemonstration in view of the detection of piston ring light leak degree. All of theselaid a solid foundation for further research.
