In this paper, the measurement system of the piston ring end gap based on the computer vision is studied by using the theory of the computer vision, the theory of the image processing and the mathematics knowledge. The paper describes the framework of the measurement system and the choice of the hardware. Then many kinds of the image enhancement methods and the image edge detection algorithms are theoretically researched and experimentally compared. The appropriate algorithm is chosen based on the characteristic of the measurement system. In the same time, the relationship of the piston ring parameter is deduced based on the characteristic of the piston ring's geometry parameter. In addition, the paper gives the calibration method of the measurement system, implements the sub-pixel orientation to the image edge, analyses all kinds of factors that affect the measurement precision and gives the solution. At last, the precision of the measurement system is analyzed based on the experimental data.
