In June2006, the U.S.A debuted the talent show in NBC-America’s Got Talent, whichfeatured different kinds of performance from singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, and otherperformers. At the meantime, China launched the Chinese version of talent contest-China’s GotTalent in July2010. China’s Got Talent quickly became popular among young Chinese people.Regardless of the originating cultures, this format of talent show intrigues various audiencesacross multiple cultures. In other words, a global popular television program has been discovered,working successfully across American and Chinese cultures. In the context of this globalization,China ’s cultural communicators should first understand the cultural differences betweendifferent ethnic groups.This thesis will design and build a cultural value dimension to evaluate cultural differences,based on Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions. It will give a systematic assessment of TV shows’cultural values, to make up for the lack of domestic television shows in intercultural studies. |
