The dynamic target de tection and tracking technology is the basis of research inthe field of computer vision and intelligent monitoring,t he technology is widely usedin various fields such as military and civilian. Currently, Many progresses have beenmade in the study of moving target detection and tracking algorithms; however, it isuncommon to realize these algorithms using hardware which is still a research hotspotat present. FPGA hardware processor has a fast processing speed, parallel processingcharacteristics, so it is suitable to video image processing area. therefore, the researchof target tracking algorithm based on FPGA has a certain academic significance andpractical value.The paper introduces the development and application of movement targettracking technology in the domestic and overseas. On the basis of analyzingmovement target tracking methods, template matching tracking algorithm based onbackground subtraction was chosen. the design of the moving target tracking systemwas completed with the DE2-70development board of Altera company.Firstly, three kinds of main motion target detection algorithm is analyzed, thebasic principle and its advantages and disadvantages of optical flow, interframedifference and background subtraction division method were introduced. Analyzedsingle target tracking method, and introduce principle and characteristics of pointtracking, kernel tracking, silhouette tracing and structure model tracking. Throughanalysis and comparison, template matching tracking algorithm based on backgroundsubtraction was adopted. Which extract the moving object template by backgroundsubtraction detection, tracking target with template matching tracking algorithm. Thisalgorithm takes less resources, is suitable for implementation in FPGA. The FPGAimplementation scheme of the algorithm and hardware architecture andimplementation process were introduced in detail. Finally, based on the system module partition, compiled Verilog program onQuartusII9.0software development platform. Completed the video image collection,detection of moving targets tracking and display on DE2-70development board.Experimental results shows that the tracking system can detect and track the target inreal-time.
