With the evolution of information globalization and the rapid development of thetelecommunications industry, the number of network users is growing rapidly. As anetwork connection between the core network and the customers, the optical accessnetwork faces enormous challenges and opportunities. As the main access technology inoptical access network, Passive Optical Networks (PON) has vast potential for futuredevelopment. With the growing severity of global warming and energy crisis makesenergy consumption a key question for the future development of optical accessnetwork. Meanwhile, the localization trend in PON is increasingly evident whichprovide conditions for the introduction of network coding (NC) and the optimization ofnetwork. However, PON generated a new transmission environment with NC, thetraditional mechanisms are no longer applicable, and it leads a serious impact on theperformance of transmission, quality of service (QoS) guarantee and energy-savingtechnologies. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the transmission and Controlmechanism of NC technology in PON, the research of QoS guarantee, energy efficiencyand the coding efficiency.The paper is based on Ethernet Passive optical network (EPON), starts studyingfrom the basic principles to achieve NC in green EPON, analyzes the new transmissionenvironment after the introduction of NC technology in the green EPON, further studiesthe impact on the energy-saving technologies and green EPON QoS by NC, builds anetwork simulation platform, proposes optimized rules and control process for NC andfurther proposes a hybrid scheduling mechanism green EPON based on NC which ismore suitable for the new network environment with the introduction of NC andenergy-saving technology. The main work is divided into the following sections:(1) For the development trend of the access network, the paper has an overview onthe key issues of PON network standards, energy-saving technologies and NCtechnology. The paper describes the background, significance and research status athome and abroad and the necessity of related technology research on the green EPONbased on NC.(2) The basic principles of EPON network based on the NC theory are studied. Theimpact on energy-saving technologies and QoS in the EPON caused by the introduction of NC is analyzed.(3) The basic NC steps in the EPON are studied and a rule for encoding of packetqueues is designed. A NC control mechanism is proposed, the wasted of bandwidth inthe encoding packets is effectively solved and the occupation of Optical Network Unit(ONU) cache by decoding packages is reduced. At last, a simulation platform is built onthe OPNET network simulation software, the method is validated by the simulation.(4) A NC-based hybrid scheduling mechanisms for green EPON including energymanagement, time slot management, resource allocation, and Quality-of-Service (QoS)scheduling are proposed in this paper. An energy-saving scheme that is based onBidirectional Centric Scheduling is designed. It achieves higher energy efficiency underlow traffic loads and provides better QoS assurance. the method is validated by thesimulation.
