Remote e-healthcare monitoring system (RHM system) is an important part ofe-healthcare system. With the feature of convenience and low cost, RHM system hasbeen extensively used in post-acute care and chronic disease management. Due to theprivacy of personal health information (PHI), it is of paramount importance to carry outhealth care monitoring via secure and dependable network. However, the networkconnectivity of the existing RHM systems are unreliable in disaster area because of theunforeseeable damage to the communication infrastructure. Therefore, it is not sure thatthese RHM system depended on communication infrastructure can work in a disasterarea. To address this problem, in this paper, we present a Secure VANET-Based RemoteE-Healthcare Monitoring System (SVC) by utilizing the unique "store-carry-forward"communication feature of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). With the"vehicle-to-vehicle"(V2V) communication mode, SVC is an infrastructure-free RHMwhich can work in a disaster area as a post-disaster RHM system. In SVC, to improvethe network performance of VANET, we propose a two-level VANET network model, inwhich not only the hospital vehicles but also the volunteer vehicles are play the role ofnetwork nodes. For the trust management of the vehicles, a novel two-level keymanagement model by mixing PKI-based cryptosystem and ID-based cryptosystem iscustomized for the VANET. For the security and privacy protection, we use digitalsignature, symmetric encryption, and pseudonym to implement message authentication, content privacy, and identity privacy, respectively. In addition, the strong contextprivacy is taken into account in SVC by combining searchable public-key encryptionand broadcast technique. Finally, we give comprehensive security analysis of SVC, andanalyze the performance of SVC using the experiment results of PBC Library and jPBCLibrary. The analyses demonstrate that SVC is a secure and efficient RHM system.
