Study on electromagnetic scattering from sand has important applications in the field of microwave remote sensing, target detection and ecological environment protection in desert district, etc. This paper deals mainly with the computations of surface scattering and volume scattering from sand.Firstly, the dissertation presents the calculation methods of electromagnetic scattering from rough surfaces. Backscattering from two-dimensional rough surface is investigated with the Kirchhoff approximation, the small perturbation method and the small slope approximation, respectively. Then the modeling of rough surface and that of sand are discussed based on their statistical properties parameters. Surface scattering from the two-scale sand is studied with the small slope approximation.Secondly, the conventional radiative transfer theory is compared with the dense medium radiative transfer theory, which is used to study the volume scattering from sand. The consistency between the results and the measured data verifies that this method could calculate the electromagnetic scattering field efficiently. Finally, given its calculation formulas, Monte Carlo simulation method for electromagnetic scattering from sand is studied in detail. The influence of different parameters of sand on results is discussed. The scattering characteristics of electrically large sand can be studied by combining electromagnetic field of subdivided facets. The comparison between the results and the measured data shows that this method could calculate the electromagnetic scattering usably and conveniently.
