Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) is the mainstream in the field of flat panel display,and backlight package is an important and indispensable part of LCD.Light Guide Plate(LGP) is the key component of backlight package.For achieving the optical requirements,conventional LGPs need reflective films,diffusion films,prism films and so on.In this paper,the volume scattering LGPs change the point light into surface light by the scattering particles.The design reduces or even completely eliminates other optical films,and improves the optical performances.It can also simplify the process and reduce costs and power consumption.In this paper,the optical properties of the volume scattering LGP were simulated by Light Tools software.This simulation was based on Mie theory and Monte Carlo method was used to calculate the entire ray-tracing process.The design process included the establishment of the model,set-up the various properties of light guide plates and other parts,and the simulation.By analyzing the results of optical simulation and results of testing experimental samples, the optical uniformity that was affected by the particle concentration,particle size and relative refractive index was studied.The results show that the concentration of particles,particle size, and the relative refractive index play an important role in the optical uniformity.Therefore,the desired results would be achieved by adjusting the concentration of particles,the particle size, and the relative refractive index.By changing the base angles of the symmetric and asymmetric micro-prisms on bottom surface,the angle of emission light was simulated,respectively.The results show that the optical path will be changed by changing the base angles of symmetric and asymmetric micro-prisms,and that the angle of the emission light can be adjusted.The uniform distribution of micro-prisms on bottom surface has not effect on the improvement of the optical uniformity. However,the non-uniform distribution of micro-prisms can improve the optical uniformity.The distribution of micro-prisms on bottom surface and distribution of light influenced by the assuming density function of the prism parameter were analyzed.By adjusting the parameters and searching for the optimal distribution of non-uniform micro-prisms on bottom surface,the optical uniformity can be reached.
