Laser radar imaging is an integrated technology that consists of laser physics, atmospheric optical and radar theory, it is greatly used in the military and engineering. Range-gated imaging technology can target a certain distance, reduce noise and improve the signal to noise ratio, it can obtain not only the intensity information of the target, but also the range information of the target, in other words, the three-dimensional object information. In the process of target recognition, the three-dimensional information can be better recognized. In this paper, based on range-gated imaging, we studied the principle of gain modulation, analysis the model, simulate the process of the imaging and operate the imaging experiments, after that we analyzes the results.First, investigated the progress in range gated imaging research, construct a theoretical model of laser radar SNR and the effective distance, the range accuracy was studied, consult to foreign literature we choose the gain modulation imaging based on range-gated imaging, By dealing with the intensity images we can get the target distance information, analysis of the accuracy of the imaging from which the important factors are the gain modulation characteristics and SNR. Secondly, according to the imaging plan, we simulated the gain modulation rangegating imaging, using3DMAX software to build the imaging target, get the target information via the Visual Studio software, sent the target data into Matlab to do some numerical calculations. From the simulation we obtained the range information of the target, and discussed the distance accuracy, the result means the feasibility of imaging experiment program. Then, the gain characteristics of the MCP were studied, theoretical analysis showsthat the gain of the MCP is controlled by the load voltage, test the high voltage output waveform of the control circuit, measure the gain characteristics, fitting the gain curve, ready for the next imaging experiments. Finally, we build the imaging platform, Measure the pulse delay, set the gating control sequence, test the gain of MCP, we imaging the target from60meters away,According to the gain modulation algorithm and gain characteristic curve we get the range image of the target, analyse the range accuracy of the image.
