With the rapid development of domestic and foreign power industry and people’s dailylife and production growing dependence on electricity, ensure high quality, safe and reliableenergy supply is one of the necessary conditions of modern society to realize sustainabledevelopment. Transmission lines as the sole channel for transporting electrical energy, it’s safeand stable operation will have a direct impact on the power supply reliability of the entirepower system. When the transmission line failure, can quickly and accurately find out thefault location, timely repair lines and restore power, can be reduced due to power outagescaused economic losses, but also has a very important significance to the safe and stableoperation of the whole power system.Developed a fast and accurate fault location system has become an urgent demand forpower systems sector, but also domestic and foreign scientists continue to study the issue.This paper first analyzes the transmission line traveling wave generation mechanism andpropagation characteristics, and the existing traveling wave fault location principle and faultlocation system of application and development were analyzed ans summarized. On the basisof previous studies, the article proposes a structure based on FPGA+dual SDRAM designscheme, The structure not only make full use of FPGA high-speed, flexible logic controlability, but also saves in the traditional design of DSP or ARM controller overhead. Deviceuses FPGA to control high-speed ADC to collect transient traveling wave signal, ensure theoriginal signal without waveform distortion. Uses table tennis way the traveling wave dataquickly cache to SDRAM, achived the transient traveling wave signal in real time, no deadtime acquisition; fault data through USB interface storage to an external hard drive, The faultinformation obtained by FPGA processing, which transmits over Ethernet to the server foranalysis and display.This paper introduces in detail the traveling wave fault location system structure designand technical indicators, On this basis, gives the hardware design of each module, the designof the device is divided into a front-end signal conditioning module, fault signal generationmodule, data acquisition module, data storage module and transmission module. Use AltiumDesigner09software to complete the work of the hardware circuit design and PCB boardlayout. Each module logic control program written using Verilog HDL language in theQuartus II integrated development environment, using Modelsim software to functionalsimulate and debug. Finally, the device has carried on board level test, test results show thatthe device is capable of high speed acquisition of external analog signals, and the rapid cacheand network transmission, Proof device design is feasible, stable operation.
