The economic and reliable operation of power system requires an exact andfast determination of the point where a fault occurs. A method of quickly andaccurately locating transmission line faults has been a much-desired tool forcontrol center operators and the repair crews. It is also an important research areain electrical engineering.Traveling wave is a mutation and singularity signal. Above all, workingprinciples of transmission line fault location techniques based on fault generatedvoltage and current traveling waves are introduced by the thesis. Type A faultlocation technique measures time delay between the first and second surge faultpoint. Type D measures arriving time of fault initiated surge at both ends of themonitored line. Type E measures time delay of reflection fault point to the surgeinjected by circuit breaker enclosing. Next some key techniques, such asmeasurement of fault generated traveling wave signals, super high speed records, wavelet detection of traveling wave pulses and the precise time synchronism ofdouble end equipment, are discussed. Then some problems from practicalapplication of distance finding techniques of traveling wave are presented. Finally, the structure and operating principle of modern fault locator oftransmission line based on traveling waves are analyzed. The operatingexperience of XC-2000 type fault locator of transmission is also summarized.Secondary current of the traditional current transformer is directly collected andthree different location principles (type A, type D and type E) can beimplemented by the locator.
