Emergency search and rescue, military defense both require lots of infrared targetimages. However, the real shot of infrared target image under various scenes or weatherconditions, especially, some military targets or such harsh environment, are difficult tocomplete, even if a quantity of testing cost was spent. Computer simulation technologycan’t only save a lot of manpower and resources, but also facilitate the synthesis of variousforms of thermal infrared images, which can’t be shot in field experiments under harshnatural and geographical conditions. This paper analyzes thermal equilibrium process oftargets based on thermal radiation of objects and thermal equilibrium basic principles, afterthat, researches on the simulation of aerial target, ground target, sea-surface target andspace target. The main contents and research results are as follows:(1) This paper simulates the infrared images of plane, tank, ship and space target.Firstly, thermal equilibrium processes of ordinary stationary targets, moving targets andhigh-speed moving targets are modeled; then, target surface is divided into a large quantityof small surface elements according to the condition of infrared radiation, after that, thetemperature distribution of target is obtained through model calculation or empirical values,based on what the infrared radiation distribution is calculated; finally, grayscale infraredimages are generated. Due to space targets’ long distance, details are ignored, and it isabstracted as a bright circle decreasing outward from bright dot under atmosphericattenuation effects to realize simulation.(2) By superimposing generated objects and different backgrounds, kinds of infraredimages are formed. Firstly, the target and background infrared image is processed bygeometric transformation as needed; then, the grey level histogram of background image isadjusted according to the gray level of target image; finally, after image preprocessing,infrared image is synthesized by the target image and background image.(3) Participate in the design and implemention of hardware demonstration systemwhich is a platform made up with CPCI industrial PC, CPCI image simulation andcommunication control CPCI card, with FPGA+DSP as the core architecture, for infraredtarget simulation, image synthesis and playback. In the system, PC software is coded by using Labwindows/CVI. The entire system with beautiful interface is easy to operate, andparameters such as target selection, ambient temperature, light conditions, wind speed andinfrared images band can be selected as demands to simulate single infrared image orsequences. The simulation system has been actually used in the863subject, and played animportant role in the work of debugging and acceptance check.
