With the increasing requirements of structural safety in the aviation industry, structural healthmonitoring (SHM) technology has become a hot field of research at home and abroad, in which,structural health monitoring technology based on the elastic wave propagation in the structure is themost widely used, because of the elastic wave have the flexibility to allow people to choose the mostappropriate mode for a special task and the ability to propagate a long distance. However, thestructural health monitoring technology is mainly studied in the experimental laboratory; lessstructural health monitoring system can be used in the actual engineering, especially in the aviationfield with stringent requirements on the quality and size of the system. With the purpose of applyingstructural health monitoring technology to practical engineering, a health monitoring system based onthe PXI platform is designed in this paper. The system is consisted of piezoelectric sensors/drivearray arranged in the structure, multi-channel USB bus-based switch board, PCI bus-basedmulti-channel charge amplifier, high-speed data acquisition card and high-speed signal generationcard. Combined with structural health monitoring algorithm, positioning imaging experiment of theimpact and the damage done on the stiffened panel structure, common in aerospace structures,demonstrated the active and passive health monitoring technology.The main purpose of this paper is hardware design of the health monitoring system. First, thecharacteristics of the measuring circuit for the selected sensors and actuators in the health monitoringsystem are derivate. Then, a charge amplifier is designed. According to a damage localizationalgorithm, a multi-channel system switch is designed. Combined with the appropriate digitalacquisition card and signal generation card, a health monitoring system based on PXI platform iscomplete. Finally, In order to verify the functionality and stability of the system, an active damagelocating experiment and a passive impact locating experiment are performed. The experimental resultsshow that the system has stability and practical functions to meet the requirements of practicalengineering applications.
