With the high-speed development of the communication technology, fibercommunication is becoming a main force of the Chinese communication technology amongthese years. PON(Passive Optical Network) technology, main technology in the fiberaccess network, is widely used in ordinary people, in the form of FTTB (Fiber to thebuilding) and FTTH(Fiber to the home).As the number of users increasing and thebandwidth speeding, the PON network appear congestion just the same as the IP MANnetwork, causing damage to the stabilization of the network. Since most of thecommunication operators don’t have the flow monitoring system of the PON network, thepurpose of this paper is to design a flow monitoring system of the PON network.This paper first introduces the technology of the PON network, analyzes the networkcongestion of the PON network, describes the main content and the purpose of this paper,then introduces the main stream technology of flow monitoring of PON network, such asSNMP monitoring technique, Netflow monitoring technique, MRTG monitoring technique,etc. SNMP technique is a research focus of this paper, which includes five messageoperation, MIB(Management Information Base) and its tree structure.Then this paper describes the general design and the detail design of each module of theflow monitoring system of PON network, and system testing. In this system, port flowdata are collected regularly by SNMP monitoring technique through the MIB of PON devicesand stored into the database. It can be imported data configuration and test the connectivityof PON device, extract the historical flow data of some PON device from database andgenerate graphical interface, analyze the congestion conditions from flow data and generate alarm information in this system. JAVA language is used in this system, and SNMP4Jopen-source project is used in SNMP coding. Multithreading technique is introduced into thissystem by concurrent access to different devices in order to shorten the time of collecting data,which is time consuming by polling access all PON devices in SNMP. It uses SQL server2008database and C/S mode to implement design in this system, present the results in realtime flow chart or historical flow chart.The flow monitoring system of the PON network realizes monitoring, inquiry and earlywarnings of the PON network. It can be used by the network maintaining engineers to inquirepromptly and position exactly the failure of PON network causing by network congestion, andalso be used to take steps to cut-over or expansion of some relative links and devices fromearly warnings. Active case finding and fixing the network congestion could bringstabilization to the PON network.
