In 2003, Ministry of Education promulgated the New Curriculum for senior high school students. In the structure of curriculum objectives, the new curriculum requires the promotion of the learners’ comprehensive language application ability, which includes cultivating their cultural awareness.At the same time, it puts forward high requirements for the first time to cultivate the students’ cultural awareness in the New English Curriculum Standard in 2003. The New Curriculum shows it clearly that knowing more about the culture of English-speaking countries can contribute to the understanding of our native culture and is beneficial to cultivate the consciousness of the world. Thus the students can form the ability of cross-cultural communication. Therefore, the application of cultural teaching and the cultivating of cross-cultural communicative awareness play a more and more important role in senior high school English teaching, which should attract more attention of the educators and the students.Nowadays, there exist such problems in our countries’ English teaching in high schools. That is, we pay more attention to the teaching of vocabulary and grammar and ignore the teaching of cultural background knowledge. It leads to the students to recite more words, know how to analyse the structure and grammar about the sentences and articles. The aim is to improve the students’ test-taking skills. But, as a result, they may know little about the culture of English-speaking countries and may misunderstand the cultural point of the articles. What is worse, they focus on the language point and grammar focus which make their course boring. The students don’t have high interests of learning English.Based on the interests of learning cultural information, the writer chooses two classes in X High School of Yinchuan as an example. The writer gets data about the deficient phenomena of cultural learning by questionnaire survey and interview from five aspects. That is, the interest of learning culture, the content of the textbook, the reading learning in English, study consciousness and the interests of cultural teaching, which proves that we should start the method of culture teaching. According to the questions, the writer puts forward three methods to solve the problems and provide some advice on arousing the students’ interests of learning English and broaden students’ scope of knowledge. The first one is to cultivate the students’ interests of learning English. The second is to improve the teachers’ teaching method and improve the quality of teachers. The last one is to use various ways to aid the students to cultivate their cultural consciousness. It is beneficial for the English teaching and can provide some advice on the effective method of culture teaching in other schools.
