Language is a part of culture and it is also the carrier of culture.With the globalization of the world economy,more and more people are aware of the important role of culture in English communication.The purpose of language learning is to communicate.The task of English teaching is not only to teach students the basic knowledge of English,but also to cultivate students' ability of using language to communicate.To some extent,language teaching means teaching culture and it is to cultivate students' cultural awareness,cultural knowledge,cultural understanding and intercultural communication awareness and ability.With the in-depth study of the ultimate goal of language learning,more and more scholars from different angles verify the importance of teaching culture in the process of language learning.For the ordinary high school “ English Curriculum Standard ”,we want to achieve the overall goal of English teaching and it is necessary to combine teaching culture with English teaching,to cultivate students' cultural awareness and to improve students' intercultural communicative competence.Although the Ministry of Education has made clear provisions,because of variousinternal and external factors,there are still many problems in the actual teaching process.In addition,in the study of the comprehensive ability of English learners,reading comprehension occupies more and more important proportion,and more and more attention has been paid to the teaching of English reading comprehension.A large number of experimental studies show that the English reading barriers for students not only exist in the vocabulary and grammar,but also in cultural background knowledge.If students lack awareness and understanding of western culture,ignoring the differences between two kinds of culture and it will lead to misunderstanding in the learning and communication.So as an English teacher,should consciously,purposeful,and as much as possible to introduce the cultural background knowledge of English-spoken countries and the differences between Chinese and western cultures,and strive to improve students' sensitivity to language and cultural differences,so that they understand the language features and cultural habits of people living in different social backgrounds.Therefore,the teaching of culture in senior high school English reading class should become an important research topic.This topic is especially important for reading comprehension teaching in senior high school English teaching.In this study,based on the research achievements at home and abroad about the relationship between language and culture theories,this paper investigates the following questions by using questionnairesand interviews from the perspective of senior high school English reading teaching: what are the senior high school students and teachers' understanding and attitudes towards teaching culture? What are the practical ways adopted by teachers in teaching culture? What factors influence and restrain teachers' performing teaching culture in English reading class of senior high schools at present? The survey results show that most of the teachers and students have realized the importance of teaching culture,and they both have strong interest in it.However,in the actual teaching process of English reading,due to various factors,the implementation of teaching culture is still relatively low;the use of teaching culture method is single.The main reasons are the following:first,teachers' cultural knowledge is insufficient,lack of systematic and effective teaching culture strategies;second,high schools English textbooks' cultural background knowledge is not enough,and the content is not new enough,there is no suitable teaching culture materials;third,the current examination system and shortage of teaching hours affect teaching culture;fourth,the heavy academic burden on students learning,lack of learning time,energy and so on.This paper based on the research on the current situation of teaching culture in senior high school English reading teaching,and combined with rich teaching experience of teachers' opinions,and finally puts forward some suggestions,hoping to be able to play a role in promoting teaching culture in senior high schoolEnglish reading in the future.
