As a basic one of the main throughout the entire junior high school curriculum,function is more abstract and complex, but also can exercise the student from the level of concrete thinking to abstract thinking. A function is a junior high school students’ function concept after the first contact with a specific function types, the learning and subsequent other functions in a specific function model establishment and identification of laid a fundamental role, to improve the level of students’ thinking ability and plays an important role in promoting. This research attempts to mainly through empirical investigation on junior middle school students cognitive level to study the situation and characteristics of a function.This study firstly by the commonly used function cognition, teaching at home and abroad and the method of literature review, the studies on a function related to borrow the SOLO taxonomy theory as the junior high school students a function to research the theoretical framework of cognitive level. Secondly, this research paper in cross middle school middle school has carried on the empirical investigation, a function mainly includes the students cognitive test questionnaire and individual interview questionnaire and teachers a function teaching. Among them, the cognitive level of junior high school students a function testing questionnaire investigation mainly revolves around three dimensions design: The first dimension is according to the students choose the answer, in this paper, the reasons and the corresponding interviews to investigate junior middle school students; cognitive status of the concept of a function; The second dimension is mainly through the students choose the answer and the corresponding interview to understand their image of a function, and the nature of the cognitive situation The third dimension is according to the students present a solution process for the analysis of the cognitive status of comprehensive application ability of a function. In addition, this study adopts the SOLO taxonomy to three cognitive dimension the classification of the corresponding level, and combining the spss17.0 software to sorting, statistical data, also analyzed the different grades,different gender a function of the junior high school students cognitive development characteristics and the relationship between the three dimensions. Finally, this study based on the principle of "teaching and learning", the empirical research results of the analysis respectively to teacher’s "teaching" and students "learning" put forward some humble opinion.
