In the 21 th century with fast developing technology, talents in various countries are facing fierce competition during personal development. The overall science literacy in the society creates a positive environment for talent cultivation and drives the continuous enhancement of the country’s comprehensive strength. There are a variety of methods to improve the national level of science literacy, one of which is the reading of scientific literature. It is necessary for a large number of people to improve their science literacy, including teenagers who are attending school. Adolescence is an important period developing life philosophy and worldview. In addition to the scientific knowledge in physics, chemistry and biology, scientific essays included in the course of Chinese, which illustrate scientific knowledge and methods in a vivid, figurative way, should also be paid enough attention to. Nonetheless, in the actual practice of Chinese education, scientific essays are not taught properly, or even being ignored. This hinders effective acquisition of scientific knowledge. Based on the analysis of different versions of Chinese textbooks and the questionnaires filled out by students, this paper explores and reflects on existing problems in the compilation of textbook and in the teaching process.The paper is divided into four sections.Section One deals with the definition, classification and development of scientific essays, as well as the composition of science literacy, and offers a proper understanding of the relationship between the teaching of scientific essays and the development of science literacy.Section Two combs through scientific essays included in the textbooks published by People’s and Hubei Education Press and identifies the problems in scientific essay selection of the two versions.Section Three provides a basic knowledge of current situation of scientific essays and students’ science literacy through questionnaire survey, and analyzes existing problems in scientific essay teaching based on the content of the textbooks.Section Four reflects on scientific essay teaching from the perspective of teacher, student and teaching contents to facilitate more effective teaching of scientific essays and to help students improve their science literacy.
